24 Gloster Street : Award Winning Subiaco Heritage House
24 Gloster Street Awarded Heritage Conservation and Urban Design Award
One of Subiaco’s most admired has just been awarded the inaugural Heritage Conservation and Urban Design Awards for conservation of a heritage place. Now up for sale with The Property Exchange, this home offers the best of everything for a growing family. Judges said the home was a “true gem of a conservation project”, and it’s no wonder. When you walk through the French doors, you’re stepping back in time into this picturesque character home featuring Jarrah and Tasmanian Oak floorboards, marble tiles from floor to ceiling in the bathrooms, a huge kitchen and an enchanting garden.
This home is truly a beauty to behold and will suit perfect for professional and executive couples, families of all sizes, downsizers and anyone who wants a home that makes a big impression. “We always admired this beautiful old weatherboard home that had been so neglected for such a long time when we lived further up Gloster Street, and talked about what we could do to it. We never however imagined we would get the opportunity to fulfil this dream.
We were determined to bring back the lovely old character features of the old home whilst also creating a spacious family home with all the modern features for today’s lifestyle. It took a great deal of effort, was challenging at times, but was a lot of fun and well worth the end result which we love. Now with the girls all at school in Mosman Park we need to relocate to be close to their activities but we are going to find it hard to leave this beautiful home which has everything we ever wanted.”
According to selling agent Niki Peinke of The Property Exchange has been a lot of interest in the home, mainly by local residents who have been watching the transformation for quite some time. “The air gets a bit thinner up in the mid to high $2 millions and there are not as many buyers in this league,” she says. “But for some who is, they could not find a home which offers such a masterful design and such a high level of finish as well as such beautiful character. It will be snapped up! The home is indeed very worthy of its award and as the added bonus of an elevated position on the North side of a top street.”
Designed by architect Joe Chindarsi, this picturesque character home is situated on the north side of the best end of Gloster Street, just moments away from Subiaco and all its facilities.

‘A true gem of a conservation project’
This was a challenging project to conserve a building that was in an extremely dilapidated condition. Conservation works were undertaken with a restrained hand and particular attention to detail including:
- sourcing of appropriate materials and tradespeople
- retaining and conserving as much of the original fabric as possible
- where original fabric could not be conserved, variously reconstructing the detailing to a known earlier state or sourcing appropriate recycled materials.
The application of sound conservation practices and a respect for the original building has led to an outstanding conservation outcome.
